Emergence of New Behaviors in Autism Spectrum Disorder: A Conceptual Framework for Understanding and Supporting Behavioral Change
 </dc:title>

<dc:description>
Purpose: The emergence of new behaviors in autism spectrum disorder (ASD) presents ongoing challenges for caregivers and clinicians, particularly in individuals with limited verbal communication. This paper aims to reframe such behaviors as meaningful expressions of underlying needs and to propose a structured conceptual framework for understanding and responding to behavioral change.

Methods: This study adopts a conceptual and integrative approach, synthesizing existing literature alongside observational insights to develop the Behavior Emergence Matrix (BEM). The framework draws on established models, including Antecedent–Behavior–Consequence (ABC) analysis, needs-based communication theory, and dynamic systems perspectives.

Results: The proposed BEM organizes behavioral, contextual, and temporal patterns into a structured format that may support more consistent interpretation of emergent behaviors. Unlike traditional caregiver logs, the framework emphasizes pattern recognition, contextual thresholds, and alignment with caregiver response strategies. While preliminary examples illustrate its potential utility, the framework remains conceptual and requires empirical validation.

Conclusions: This paper advocates a shift from reactive behavior management toward interpretive and anticipatory care grounded in understanding behavior as communication. The BEM provides a foundation for future research integrating longitudinal caregiver data, physiological signals, and machine learning approaches. Further empirical studies are needed to evaluate its predictive utility and clinical applicability.
</dc:description>
